On August 1st, the opening ceremony of the International Summer School of School of Qilu Transportation, Shandong University,2019 was held in Qianfoshan Campus. This international summer school was hosted by School of Qilu Transportation, the School of Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, and the International Underground Space Joint Research Center (ACUUS YG) Asia) and the World Federation of Young Geoscientists (YES-Network). 26 outstanding students from more than 20 universities at home and abroad gathered in the Shandong University to learn together. Mr. Jacques Besner, the founder of the International Research Center for Underground Space, Nanjing University Professor Xiaozhao LI, Director of the Institute of Underground Space and Geological Environment, and Professor Jian LIU, Secretary of the Party Committee of School of Qilu Transportation, attended the event and gave speeches. Professor Zhenhao XU of School of Qilu Transportation chaired the ceremony.
First, Professor Zhenhao XU gave a brief introduction to the International Summer School. Since the opening of the International Summer School, Shandong University has always adhered to "introducing overseas famous teachers, insisting on open sharing, keeping up with academic frontiers, strengthening practical links, cultivating innovation ability, and improving special skills". The principle follows "emphasizing both theory and practice, innovation and inheritance", and strives to make the international summer school a pioneering and experimental area for deepening education, teaching reforms and exploring open and collaborative education.
Professor Jian LIU, Secretary of the Party Committee of School of Qilu Transportation, delivered a speech on behalf of the organizer and extended a warm welcome to the experts, scholars and students. He pointed out that since its inception, School of Qilu Transportation has been focusing on "high-quality, international, innovative and open", attaches great importance to academic exchanges and international cooperation, constantly promotes the research and exploration of urban underground space, experts and scholars are welcome to actively share professional knowledge and subject experience. Professor LIU hoped that all students could consolidate knowledge and harvest friendship in the process of learning and exchange. And he expected the school a complete success.
Afterwards, Mr. Jacques Besner, the visiting professor at the University of Montreal and the founder of the International Joint Research Center for Underground Space, gave a speech and introduced the current situation of underground space development to students from the perspective of urban planning. He hoped that this activity can broaden students' international vision and improve cross-cultural communication ability, and cultivate high-quality talents with international competitiveness. Professor Xiaozhao LI, the director of the Institute of Underground Space and Geological Environment of Nanjing University, delivered a speech, pointing out that under the background of continuous urbanization, rational development and utilization of underground space resources are great significance. Nowadays, we should maintain open and cooperative mentality, jointly promote long-term progress in the urban underground space field. Finally, Shixuan LIU, who is from Tsinghua University of Taiwan, spoke as a student representative. He hoped that students could consolidate the theoretical foundation, broaden the international perspective, inspire innovative thinking, and inspire scientific research wisdom through this summer school.
Mr. Jacques Besner and Professor Xiaozhao LI gave wonderful lectures on the theme of this event-"frontier of urban underground space development".
From the ACUUS Secretariat, YES-Network, Nanjing University, Taiwan Success University, Southeast University, Beijing University of Technology, Xi'an University of Science and Technology, dozens of well-known experts at home and abroad, relevant department heads, and international summer school students and volunteers participated this activity.
